Plum Cove Studios famous PHLATT CAR

  • Phlatt's cars look good behind any era loco, electric, diesel or steam.
  • All parts pre-cut for precise fit and are self aligning… ensuring squareness.
  • Only basic hand tools required for assembly.
  • All holes jig-drilled for uniformity, allowing optional accessories (e.g. Gondola Sides or our "Adirondack" Chairs) to be interchanged among cars.
  • With straightforward construction, our kits make great "Father/Son" or "Grandfather/Grandson" projects.
  • Couplers are solid (non opening) made to IBLS standards by Railroad Supply Inc. and are pre-installed in Plum Cove Studio’s coupler pockets, ready for action.
  • Extremely rugged, these Phlatt cars will last.
  • Sprung/Equalized sideframes allow ± .5 inch deflection for each wheel for great tracking.
  • Standard springs allow for 600 lb load. Fit your own springs for greater capacity.
  • All kits come with cast iron wheels CNC machined and pressed on axles to the gauge you specify (7.25-7.5 or custom).
  • Our Arch Bar sideframes and bolsters are constructed just like the prototype, not cast.
  • Each pair of trucks includes top and bottom bolsters, ready to be bolted onto our Phlatt car kits… or on your home-brew car.
  • Each car utilizes 96 strips of wood for the deck. Pine is standard, Oak and Mahogany are available at nominal cost. Each strip is pre-drilled with 4 holes, ready for fastening.
  • Decorative hardware is attached with special slot-less hex bolts, which give the appearance of full-scale bolts and washers.

YOU CAN’T BUILD IT ANY CHEAPER!
Even veteran craftsmen admit they’d be hard pressed to make a comparable railroad car for less money. Plum Cove Studios proudly offers these cars – including cast iron wheels CNC machined to IBLS standards (4.125" tread) and real arch bar trucks -- for barely more than the street value of the component parts.

YOU CAN’T BUILD IT QUICKER!
Combined, the engineers at Plum Cove Studios have been in the model railroad hobby for over 65 years... constantly searching for the quickest and easiest way to build model rolling stock. The Phinneas T. Phlatt design is the culmination of that tireless research. Combined with "real-world" design principles, our Phlatt Car is an excellent tracking, perfectly-proportioned workhorse able to haul heavy loads -- all from a kit that assembles in less than a week.

YOU CAN’T BUILD IT EASIER!
All you’ll need to assemble the kit -- from start to finish -- is a hammer, drill, screw driver, pliers, socket drivers and basic painting supplies. If you put your own socks on, you’ve got the aptitude to assemble the Phinneas T. Platt. All holes are pre-drilled in special jigs to assure uniformity. Each kit comes complete with illustrated instructions. A "help line" phone number is also included just in case.

WHY BUY A PHLATT CAR?
THE PLATT CAR: MOST VERSATILE CAR ON THE RAILROAD!
Phlatt Cars are the simplest, most versatile cars on the railroad. Any railroad veteran will tell you that every car has a purpose... but none is as adaptable as the Phlatt Car. A Phlatt Car can carry everything.. Today you’ll haul passengers sitting on our optional "Adirondack" seats, tomorrow you’ll haul gravel utilizing the optional side panels that fit snugly into the "stake" pockets", the day after tomorrow you’ll haul five gallon pails of liquid to their destination. No other car on the railroad is as versatile as the Phinneas T. Platt Car.

NEW TO THE HOBBY?
If you’re just getting into large scale model railroading, rolling stock (freight cars) are a good place to start. Just having a car or two will allow you to join any one of the many "Live Steam" clubs that dot New England (We’ll even give you a list of clubs.). Although they’re nice to have, you don’t need a steam locomotive. Many "Live Steamers" have built engines, but have no cars. As a result, they’re often willing to pull other people’s cars. It’s a win-win situation, and is a great way for you to join the hobby. (And don't forget to check out our wonderful new locomotive, the "Generic Electric".)

Put your Phlatt cars to work. Live Steam clubs are always evolving and are constantly seeking vibrant new members to help with the expansion and maintenance of trackage. Phlatt cars are perfect for that work: hauling track panels, gravel, tools and even passengers to the project site.

YOU WON’T FIND A SIMPLER, MORE RUGGED CAR ANYWHERE!
Plum Cove Studios follows famed railroad baron Phinneas T. Phlatt’s philosophy of building railroad cars in an strong, yet uncomplicated manner. Parts are oversized and beefy. This assures not only a simplified construction but a long service life as well. An added benefit is cost effectiveness and quicker construction.

STAY ON THE TRACKS!
Often easier said than done. Plum Cove Studios’ Phinneas T. Phlatt Car is a simple, yet rugged transport designed especially for the convoluted 7.25 inch railroads common to New England. With a 600 pound load limit, you can comfortably carry two generously sized adults or a full load of various supplies without fear of over-stressing the car or affecting its ability to stay on the tracks.
